Note: Sometimes referred to as "Icon Not Made by Hands," the icon of the Holy Mandelion (mandelion = towel or kerchief) is the basic image of Christ, from which all other magisterial icons are derived. 

The original prototype of the icon is said to have appeared miraculously, not having been made by human hand. On the 16th of August, the church celebrates the transfer of the icon from Edessa of Mesopotamia to Constantinople.
