General Description:
With the Handmaiden of the Lord, the Holy Theotokos, as its guide,The Handmaidenstrives to be a beacon of light, a place where Orthodox Christian women and others who are interested in Orthodox life and spirituality can come together to learn, share, relate, and grow.

The Handmaiden addresses topics that help women from every walk of life, and covers issues that are closest to our hearts. In each issue there are general articles on such topics as childrearing and education, women¹s ministry, spirituality and Orthodox life, women¹s roles and relationships, etc. In each issue there are also regular columns and departments, such as: Heroines of the Faith (lives of female saints); The Orthodox Home (helping women to fulfill their role as the heart of the home); Woman to Woman (a forum for readers to share ideas and thoughts); Books to Treasure (reviews of books by, for, and about women); Culture Currents (interviews or articles on contemporary issues facing women in the Orthodox Church of the twenty-first century).

Announcements and Press Releases:
Announcements and press releases will be accepted, if appropriate to the magazine, on a space-available basis. Because of the quarterly nature of the magazine and length of editorial/printing cycle, these must reach us four-six months before an event. Paid advertising will be considered, if the product being advertised is appropriate to the magazine, and on a space-available basis.

Fiction:
Although we accept fiction only occasionally, we will review manuscripts crafted with an Orthodox worldview, if the general description ofThe Handmaidenis kept in mind. Length: 2000 - 2500 words.

Compensation:
Because The Handmaiden is a non-profit endeavor with no advertising income, we are generally not able to pay authors except in copies of the issue in which the article is published. Please contact us for exceptions.

Editorial Policy:
We strongly recommend that you read several issues of The Handmaiden from cover to cover before considering submission. Write on a level that the average high school graduate could understand. Write concisely and coherently, but with "punch." Dry, scholarly writing is not our aim, but neither do we want sloppy sensationalism. Strive for the golden mean: a lively style backed up by thorough research and integrity of thought.

Scripture quotations should be taken from the New King James Version if at all possible. If you need to quote from another version to make your point, please identify the version used in parentheses following the quote. Please double-check the accuracy of all biblical quotations. Non-scriptural quotations should be clearly identified with title, author, publisher, year, and page number of the source work. Rather than using extensive footnotes, we generally prefer to identify the source of a quotation in parentheses within the text. If a work is quoted more than once, the second and subsequent notes may give only the author¹s surname and the page number.

Although we reserve the right to edit material as we see fit, major rewrites are usually the author¹s responsibility. Articles accepted for publication will be sent to the author for approval after initial editing, and later should more editing be needed.

Submissions Guidelines:

Electronic:Material may be submitted toThe Handmaidenelectronically. If your word-processed document was prepared in Microsoft Word, please send it as an e-mail attachment. Otherwise, please embed the text within an e-mail message to avoid problems opening your document. Submit all e-mail queries and submissions to:czell@conciliarpress.com.

Traditional:We also accept material by regular mail, not fax, in standard double-spaced, typewritten format. Enclose a business-size SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) if you wish your manuscript returned to you. Address all queries and submissions to: The Handmaiden, c/o Conciliar Press, P.O. Box 76, Ben Lomond, CA 95005.

Queries:If you have an article idea for a future issue, we welcome carefully crafted, brief query letters, accompanied by a business-size SASE for our reply. Please state the theme of your proposed article, its approximate length, your past writing credits, background, qualifications to write about this subject, sources you will use (interviews, books, articles), availability of photographs of your subject, if relevant, and your Church affiliation. Please also enclose a short sample of your writing, published or not. We may like your proposed idea, or we may suggest a different slant for it, or we may even propose a new subject that you would be the perfect person to write about. Most assignments are made with a submission deadline of two or more months.

Completed manuscripts: You may also send a finished manuscript for our consideration. Please include a cover letter telling us something about yourself (please refer to the list in the preceding paragraph).

Thank you for considering writing for The Handmaiden. May God be glorified as we seek to spread historic Orthodox life and spirituality throughout the world.

We encourage you to become familiar with the Handmaiden. Check to see whether your church has a subscription or copies available for purchase. Subscriptions and single copies may be purchased online.
