The Handmaiden is a quarterly journal that provides a vital, vibrant community for Orthodox Christian women. It's a place where Orthodox life and spirituality are discussed, and people of all ages, jurisdictions, and backgrounds come together to learn, share, and grow. In each issue you'll find articles on topics such as women's ministry; spirituality and Orthodox life; relationships; childrearing and education; culture and tradition; and more.

Handmaiden 12:1 - Winter 2008

Father Lawrence Farley writes in his book The Gospel of John: Beholding the Glory (one of the volumes in The Orthodox Bible Study Companion series published by Conciliar Press) that "the term believe… describes the irreducible core of Christian commitment. It means to become Christ’s follower, to acknowledge that one accepts His teaching, to become His disciple and to identify oneself with the other disciples. The word believe does not just refer to the inner psychological act of placing one’s trust in Christ. Rather, it describes the outer commitment one makes with one’s entire life. … The term is, however, somewhat elastic. It can describe one who follows Christ in sincerity and zeal, as well as those who follow Him without truly committing themselves from the heart."

What does it mean to truly believe? The new issue of The Handmaiden, now available, explores the meaning of Christian belief. Features include "Believing – The Bible Way" by Fr. Lawrence Farley, "Believing in the Gospel…According to St. John" by Fr. Thomas Hopko, and "Dealing With Doubt through Prayer: An Interview with Mother Raphaela, Abbess of Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery, Otego, New York."
The issue also features a host of regular columns, including Close to Home, The Orthodox Kitchen, Verses of Praise, Women Making a Difference, Books to Treasure and Woman to Woman (a forum for readers to share ideas and thoughts).

For more than a decade, The Handmaiden, published as a 64-page journal, has been serving Orthodox women by offering them fresh content to inspire and illumine their hearts. With the Handmaiden of the Lord, the Holy Theotokos, as its guide, The Handmaiden strives to be a beacon of light, a place where Orthodox Christian women and others who are interested in Orthodox life and spirituality can come together to learn, share, relate, and grow. Join us as part of the Handmaiden community, as we prayerfully and joyfully struggle to become the women of God we long to be.
